Resistance: Bad Habit or Bio Chemistry?

At the suggestion of my mentor, I just read a book called The War of Art by Steven Pressfield.
All in all, it was a good book about how RESISTANCE stops you from taking action.
If you are in the habit of giving in to resistance, you are STUCK doing the same old things and getting the same old results. Or you are procrastinating and not getting any result at all.

This happens for artists, writers, entrepreneurs and athletes.
This happens when you start a diet, a project, a training program or a business.
This quote sums it up well:

Resistance

Resistance gets in the way of you getting the things you want in life.
Learning to move past Resistance is essential for achieving your goals and your happiness.
I enjoyed this book BUT it left out something EXTREMELY important:
Resistance CAN be bio-chemical vs bad habit.

In The War of Art, Pressfield uses the word RESISTANCE to describe the mind chatter than arises whenever you decide to try something new or make a change. Like when your mind says…

“I don’t have time for this”
“Nothing ever works out the way I want”
“I can’t take time for myself when my family needs me”
“I can’t do that until I get this clutter cleaned up”
“I don’t have the money to do that right now”
“I’m stuck with this body and I’ll never lose weight”
“Life is passing me by and there’s nothing I can do to change it”
“I’ll never get ahead”
“I can’t say no to them”

Pressfield uses the word resistance, but it’s really something bigger:
FEAR

Resistance is one way to describe fear. Others include: Indecision, Numbing, Stuffing Emotions, Tolerating , Procrastination, Avoidance, Trying To Control Outcome, Self Doubt, Hiding, Searching,
Resentment, Worry, Trying, Not Trying, Guilt, Uneasiness, Uncertainty, Stress, Blaming, Comparing, and so many more.

Fear is the state of mind behind resistance.

Fear slows you down, derails you and keeps you from achieving your goals. There are many “Mindset” techniques you can use to change your bad habits of resistance but Mindset not the only strategy.

You need a certain BIO CHEMISTRY (specifically Brain Chemistry) to change your habit of resisting.

You heard me…

Resistance can be a Bio-Chemical problem not a bad habit.
The brain makes many chemicals known as neurotransmitters and two of these chemicals in particular are the foundation of acting without resistance.
Serotonin is a very powerful brain chemical that gives you confidence, flexibility and an optimistic outlook. If your brain is deleted in Serotonin you will feel negative, worried, guilty and hesitant to take action and make change. You’ll doubt yourself and your ability to achieve a goal and get stuck in procrastination.
An equally important bio chemical defense against resistance is a group of neurotransmitters known at Catecholamine, especially Dopamine. You need Dopamine to feel alert, motivated and driven. If your brain is struggling to make this chemical, you will feel lethargic and apathetic and avoid taking action.

If you find yourself in RESISTANCE, here are 5 WAYS to BOOST YOUR BRAIN CHEMISTRY:

1. Eat More Protein – protein contains all the nutrients the brain needs to make Serotonin and Dopamine
2. Take In Some Sunshine – Serotonin is an ancient molecule that pre-dates human beings and is dependant on DAYLIGHT.
3. Exercise – a 90 min walk can increase Serotonin by 100%
4. Start A Fish Oil Supplement – Omega 3’s increase Dopamine production by 40% or more
5. Try Amino Acids or Neuro Nutrition – the brain needs specific amino acids like Tryptophan and Tyrosine to make ANTI-RESISTANCE Brain Chemicals. It will take higher concentrations than are available in food, so a good supplement program can be a GAME CHANGER.
